City Sidewalks, Trails, Bike lanes
Objective
B.3.1: Increase safe access to multi-modal transportation such as walking, biking, local transit, shuttles, waterways, etc.
Why Is This Important?
Sidewalks and trails can provide safer pedestrian and bike access to schools, shopping areas, and other needs of daily living, reduce dependence upon automobiles, and increase the ability to "age in place" without relying exclusively on daily vehicle use. People who walk and bike on a regular basis are generally healthier than those who do not.
Definition
The City's goal is to have at least 90% of local roadways (municipal maintained) with sidewalks on both sides of the street. There are certain streets that are constrained by roadway widths and environmental factors that make it infeasible to construct sidewalks. For these reasons, a goal of 90% is set instead of 100%. The City annually allocates a portion of the City's budget toward construction of new sidewalks. The City's land development codes also require developers to construct sidewalks when projects are being developed.
How Are We Doing?
Currently, 89% of the City's roadways have sidewalks both sides of the street.
